There’s nothing quite like getting out on the water and seeing Vancouver from a whole new perspective. From the iconic skyline to its infamous bridges, we love sharing the stories and history behind these beautiful landmarks. Here are seven of our favourite Vancouver landmarks that are truly best experienced from the water.
1. Siwash Rock
Rising dramatically from the waters of Stanley Park, Siwash Rock is one of Vancouver’s most recognizable natural landmarks. Standing roughly 17 metres tall, it was once known to mariners as “Nine Pin Rock” for its bowling-pin shape. Seen from the water, its scale and isolation are especially striking. On our tours, we use this striking viewpoint to share the stories that make Siwash Rock’s history such an important part of Vancouver’s coastline.
2. Lions Gate Bridge
Few sights in Vancouver are as iconic as the Lions Gate Bridge, a landmark that has shaped the city since its completion in 1938. The Lion’s Gate Bridge height is approximately 111 metres above the ocean, at its tallest point. The bridge combines impressive engineering with graceful Art Deco design. Its sweeping lines and elegant proportions make it as beautiful as it is functional, standing as a historic gateway connecting Vancouver to the North Shore.
3. Stanley Park Seawall
The Stanley Park Seawall is one of Vancouver’s most beloved and well-used landmarks, shaped by both history and community. Originally built in the early 20th century to protect Stanley Park from erosion, the seawall has grown into the city’s most popular recreational path, enjoyed daily by walkers, runners, cyclists, and visitors from around the world. Stretching along the park’s rugged shoreline, it stands as a lasting symbol of how Vancouver has designed its urban spaces around the ocean.
4. Burrard Inlet
Burrard Inlet has been central to Vancouver’s story since the city’s earliest days. The Burrard Inlet landmarks rank among the region’s most recognizable features. From Point Atkinson Lighthouse, guarding the western entrance to the inlet, to the iconic crossings like the Lions Gate Bridge and the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge. While waterfront neighbourhoods and historic sites reflect the city’s evolving relationship with the sea. The balance between nature and city is what defines Vancouver, and Burrard Inlet is where it all converges.
5. Vancouver Fuel Docks
Often overlooked from land, the Vancouver fuel docks may not be glamorous, but they’re a vital part of the story we share on our tours. These floating docks keep commercial ships, fishing vessels, and tour boats moving, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the working side of Vancouver’s waterfront. Seeing them from the water highlights the scale of the city’s marine activity and its role as a busy Pacific port.
6. Coal Harbour Skyline
Coal Harbour offers one of Vancouver’s most iconic waterfront views, shaped by decades of transformation. Once a busy industrial and shipping area, it has evolved into a vibrant harbour where marinas, seaplanes, and waterfront neighbourhoods meet the city skyline. From the water, this contrast between Vancouver’s maritime past, modern development, and surrounding mountains tells a story we love to share on our tours.
7. Canada Place
Canada Place is one of Vancouver’s most recognizable waterfront landmarks, closely tied to the city’s maritime history. Opened in 1986 for Expo 86, its iconic white sails were designed to reflect the ships that have long defined Vancouver’s harbour. Today, it serves as a major cruise ship terminal and gathering place, and from the water it marks the heart of the city’s working and cultural waterfront.
Why the Water View Matters
Vancouver is shaped by the water just as much as it is by the land, and many of its most iconic landmarks tell their story best from the sea. We love sharing this unique perspective with our guests, bringing Vancouver’s landmarks to life through stories, history, and unforgettable views.
