5 Best Photo Opportunities from Vancouver’s Water

Sea Vancouver

Vancouver is famous for its stunning skyline, but the best angles aren’t found on crowded sidewalks or rooftop patios. They are found right at sea level!

On a Sea Vancouver tour, you get an unobstructed, front-row seat to the city’s most iconic landmarks. Because our open-air Zodiacs have no glass windows to shoot through, you get glare-free shots every single time. Whether you are shooting on a professional lens or a smartphone, these are the top photography spots to look out for on our tours.

1. False Creek

Your photo journey begins the moment we leave the dock at Granville Island. False Creek offers a fantastic mix of urban architecture and coastal lifestyle.

  • What to shoot: Look for the symmetry of the historic Burrard Street Bridge from directly below, or capture the bright, eclectic floating homes of Sea Village.
  • Photo Tip: The calm waters in False Creek create beautiful, mirror-like reflections of the surrounding glass condos, especially on bright or partly cloudy days.

2. North Shore Mountains

As we head out into open water, Vancouver’s true defining backdrop reveals itself. The towering North Shore Mountains frame the entire city, offering an incredible scale that you can only fully appreciate from the water.

  • What to shoot: Frame the modern, glittering downtown skyscrapers directly against the dramatic, rugged peaks of the mountains in the background.
  • Photo Tip: On clear days, use a bit of zoom to bring the mountains closer in the frame, creating a striking contrast between the urban city and raw West Coast nature.

3. Beneath the Lions Gate Bridge

There is nothing quite like the feeling of cruising directly underneath the Lions Gate Bridge. Looking up from the water provides a massive sense of scale that you simply cannot get from land.

  • Photo Tip: Use a wide-angle lens or the 0.5x zoom setting on your phone to capture both the massive towers of the bridge and the ocean water in a single, dramatic frame.

4. Stanley Park

Stanley Park offers the perfect visual contrast where the dense coastal rainforest meets the Pacific Ocean.

  • What to shoot: Frame the towering evergreens and rugged shoreline of Stanley Park against the backdrop of Vancouver’s North Shore Mountains. You’ll also want to watch for local wildlife, including bald eagles nesting high in the park’s treetops.

5. Whytecliff Park

On our City and Nature Tour, we venture further out toward the spectacular coastal cliffs of West Vancouver at Whytecliff Park.

  • What to shoot: Capture the dramatic granite rock formations, the crashing waves, and the resident harbour seal colony that loves to lounge on the nearby rocky islets.
  • Photo Tip: Switch your camera to burst mode. When the seals pop their heads out of the water or dive off the rocks, you will be guaranteed to catch the perfect action shot.
