One of the most common wildlife sightings on a Sea Vancouver tour is the harbour seal. Whether they’re lounging on rocky islets or curiously watching the boat from the water, these playful marine mammals are always a guest favourite.
At first glance, they may all look alike, but if you take a closer look, you’ll discover that every seal is unique. Just like a fingerprint, each harbour seal has its own distinctive coat pattern, making it possible for researchers to identify individuals without ever needing to tag them.
Why Every Seal Looks Different

Harbour seals are born with a wide variety of coat colours and patterns. Some are light silver with dark spots, while others are dark grey or almost black with pale rings or speckles. No two seals have exactly the same markings.
These differences are largely genetic, much like human hair or eye colour. Even seals born in the same colony can have completely different coats because they inherit different combinations of genes from their parents. This natural variation helps create the incredible range of patterns seen throughout the population.
Scientists can actually identify individual harbour seals by their coats. By photographing and comparing the unique arrangement of spots and markings, researchers can track seals over many years without needing to tag them. This helps them study movements, behaviour, and population health while causing minimal disturbance.
More Than Just a Pretty Pattern
Although every coat is unique, there may also be some benefits to having different colours. A darker seal may blend in better in deep water or on wet rocks, while a lighter seal can be harder to spot against sunlit water or pale shorelines. Scientists are still studying exactly how much camouflage influences coat colour, but genetics remains the main reason for the variety.

One thing is certain. Those distinctive patterns make every harbour seal an individual!
See if You Can Spot the Difference
As you explore Vancouver’s coastline with Sea Vancouver, keep an eye out for the seals hauled out on rocks or swimming nearby. Instead of seeing a group of identical animals, you’ll start to notice the subtle differences between each one.
Can you find the seal with the darkest coat? The biggest spots? Or the one with almost no markings at all?
Our guides love pointing out these details and sharing the fascinating stories behind the wildlife we encounter. By the end of your tour, you may find yourself recognizing seals not just as a species, but as individuals, each with a coat that’s entirely their own!
